Antoine Davis Nearly Breaks NCAA Scoring Record
Davis was just a few points shy of breaking “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s record.
Detroit Mercy star guard Antoine Davis has been distinguishing himself this season, currently holding the record for most career three-pointers. During Thursday’s game against Youngstown State, Davis nearly broke another record, but fell just a few points short.
Davis missed a final three-pointer as the timer ran out in the last quarter, clinching the game for Youngstown 71-66 and, more importantly, costing him a shot at the NCAA Division I career scoring record originally set by “Pistol” Pete Maravich. Unfortunately, he was only short by 4 points.
“Just special,” Davis told ESPN about his current run with the Mercy. “I had the opportunity to play for my dad. I was a couple of points short of the record. God knows what he’s doing.”
“I saw that I was really close and I had a chance [to tie the record], but I was more worried about us winning the game than anything,” Davis said.

“Nobody in the country can guard me one-on-one and that’s been proven,” Davis told ESPN after the game. “I can’t be mad about it. If I had someone like me on their team, I’d have done the same thing. That’s the game plan at the end of the day.”
“People would have put an asterisk by his name if he would’ve broken [the record],” Antoine’s father and Mercy head coach Mike Davis said after the game. “Pistol Pete was in a world of his own and there will never be another Pistol Pete in college basketball. I think there will never be another Antoine the way he scored in 144 consecutive games.”
